Hot Wax Action is back… Hi! This is the first of two podcasts. The first is called “Warm It Up.” I’ll upload “Burn It Down” someday.

First I’m gonna get the party started with a bunch of classic funk jams. This is how I might go from 100bpm to around 125 over the course of an hour and get people all warmed up and ready to party.

And in the next installment I’m gonna go hard and fast and deep in the crates.

Sorry about a couple of crunchy mixes, it’s a live vinyl DJ set and I’m not out here trying to be Skratch Bastid or anything. Enjoy!

HOT WAX ACTION PODCAST ** COLLEGE ROCK EDITION

Here’s the new podcast. It’s ’80s music, but probably not the usual ’80s jams we all love to sing along with at retro night or on the 80s channel of Sirius Satellite Radio. It’s a bunch of ’80s hipster music. What they used to call “college rock.”

In the ’80s people had to listen to college radio when they wanted to be exposed to cool music. Also late-night CBC. “Brave New Waves.” They called it “college rock” because for a long time it was actually illegal for high school students to listen to cool shit. I myself did six months in juvie for getting caught with a Gang Of Four record.

Back then, there were no music blogs. But you didn’t need them. You could buy vinyl records at any shopping mall in Canada. Imagine!

Anyone who listened to college rock in the 80s was likely to get called an “art fag.” I remember the government passed a bill making it illegal to be an “art fag.” There was much persecution in the land. It was a bleak time for young music fans. Nowadays it seems like the term “art fag” has all but fallen out of common usage. That’s a relief.

So this is a mix of college rock boy-bands, to balance out the “ladies of the 80s” mix I did a couple months back. College rock happened way before the Riot Grrl revolution and the Brian Mulroney government had made it illegal for women and children to play good music in Canada in the 1980s. Except for Carole Pope because no jail could hold her. Anyway if you prefer the sound of female vocals please enjoy this previous podcast.

Many of the musical freedoms that we take for granted today were fought for and won during the college rock era. So let’s celebrate by getting drunk, reading some Derrida and turning this mix up loud. Have a great weekend.

On the weekend I went on a roadtrip with some friends. We went to Oak Lawn Farms, a zoo in Nova Scotia, and followed it up with a triple-feature at a drive-in movie theatre. You’d think it would be tough to sit through three movies but it was pretty fun. We would just get out of our cars and roam around and stuff. Drive-in movies are the way to go.

On the drive and during the screening of Madagascar 3, I interviewed all my friends and got them all to request a song for the podcast. I asked everyone five questions:
    1) What’s your name?
    2) What’s been taking up your time lately?
    3) What was your favourite thing this summer?
    4) Do you have any suggestions on how to have a good time?
    5) What song should I play next on my podcast?

And this is how it all turned out. Enjoy!

Here is a DJ mix for the blue moon. A bit of disco, some moody tech-house, some tropical percussion, and a couple of classic club jams.

It’s kind of moody because I don’t want summer to end. I hate September. I hate May and I hate September. I like February and July. Make it hot, make it cold, I don’t care. I just hate change.

I started making a vinyl mix and then I blew up my stereo by playing 45s at the wrong speed. So this mix was created in Ableton Live. Amazing what computers can do these days!

Here is a very special edition of Hot Wax Action. This week’s podcast is a mix of East Coast electronic music. I asked people to send me some jams and it turned out great.

There’s quite a range of stuff here—new-wave and synth-pop, gnarly distortion, smooth funky jams and some god damn house music, all lovingly mixed together in a big East Coast mishmash. I always think about electronic music as the music of the future, but this is the sound of right now… 2012 in the Atlantic provinces of Canada. I hope you enjoy it!

This week, I’ve been kind of obsessed with listening to 45rpm singles at 33rpm, so here’s a whole hour of it.

A few things happen when you do this to a record. The bass frequencies become even lower. High-pitched voices can become surprisingly rich. And even some Top-40 artist like Samantha Fox can take on a whole new dopeness.

After a while your ear tunes itself to this style and then when you hear normal music it all sounds like a bunch of sped-up Mickey Mouse bullshit.

I tried to pick tracks that would be appropriate for this mix. It was tempting to do a spindown every time a singer uttered a phrase like “slow down,” but I’m pleased to say I gave in to this temptation every time.

It’s Hot Wax Action #7! I took a break from disco for a minute and made a straight-up old school punk rock mix. I didn’t talk at all on this because punk songs are short and I had to hurry up and cue the next record. It’s just as well because with no edits at all this mix came out to exactly one hour long and I’m proud of that, for some reason.
